Mercedes-Benz confirmed the sale of its only factory in Argentina, located in Virrey del Pino, to a local group of investors, Prestige Auto Open Cars.

The announcement was made by the company’s president, Ola Källenius, during the 2024 results presentation. Opened in 1951, this factory was the first manufacturing facility of the automaker outside Germany and produced trucks, buses, and the Sprinter van, with more than 400,000 units manufactured since 1966.

Although the new owner may continue producing the Sprinter, this license is available only until 2030, as Mercedes-Benz is focusing on electrifying its product line, planning to sell the van exclusively in electric versions in the future.

A representative from Prestige Auto stated that the group believes in the potential of Argentina’s automotive industry, which accounts for 13% of the country’s exports, and is considering new projects to increase production and explore electromobility.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is building a new factory in Zárate, also in Argentina, where it will begin producing Accelo and Atego trucks, as well as bus chassis from the OH and OF lines, starting in 2026.

This new hub is part of a $110 million investment launched in December 2021, with the goal of manufacturing 10,000 vehicles per year in two shifts, surpassing the previous production of Virrey del Pino.
